I like to set my English class up, so that the students have to complete 6 stations in a week. Typically the stations are like this:
Station 1 - A Grammar station, where the students complete an activity relates to the Grammar topic that we are studying for the week.
Station 2 - A Spelling station, where the students complete an activity that relates to the Spelling topic that we are studying for the week.
Station 3 - A Computer station. (We have 5 computers in the classroom) The students use the computers to do some English based games, research, typing practice and other presentations.
Station 4 - A Reading station. Students in small groups read the same book. While reading the book, we focus on different reading strategies and find examples of the Grammar topic within the books that we are reading.
Station 5 - Responding to Reading. The students complete an activity that demonstrates their understanding of the book of the book we have just read.
Station 6 - A writing station. We look at different writing genres, editing skills techniques and the students get plenty of opportunities to write about different topics.
The students complete two of these stations each day. At the end of the day, the students are to write in their journal about what they have learned. They write in a double entry journal. On one side they write down what they have learned, on the other side they write down their feelings and opinions about the topic. This is their creative side. They can draw pictures to help remind themselves about the topics we are studying.
The students are grouped according to their reading ability. This is so that I can choose books which are at the students reading level and can focus on skills that are also focused on their reading ability.
